A sharp fall. A forceful recovery. Then selling pressure again. Sessions like this test more than a trader’s prediction—they test whether the whole portfolio depends on one familiar entry and one familiar stop-loss.
Our five-strategy Sensex snapshot shows three losses and two gains. The combined result is still a loss: ₹14,611 on ₹13.5 lakh, or 1.08%, before trading costs. But the two profitable strategies contributed ₹4,856, cushioning part of the damage. That is the useful story today: not a victory lap, but the value—and limits—of different trading rules.
THE SNAPSHOT
5 live strategies · 3 losses / 2 gains
−₹14,611 · −1.08% · ₹13.5 lakh capital
A market that changed direction more than once
The news flow echoed the whipsaw. Moneycontrol’s morning update reported a Sensex fall of up to 538 points. A 10:51 AM Rediff report described a recovery of most early losses, supported by SBI and Reliance. Later, Business Standard’s 12:45 PM update reported an intraday decline of 765 points and pressure from heavyweight private banks.
These are reports from different points in the session, not a reconstructed tick-by-tick chart. For a short straddle, the practical difficulty is clear: a fall can hurt the put, and a rebound can then hurt the call. A market can travel a long distance even when a single headline hides the journey.
Every strategy belongs in the table—including the losers
| Strategy | Displayed capital | Captured P&L |
|---|---|---|
| SENSEX Meridian | ₹3,00,000 | −₹6,487 |
| SENSEX Zenith | ₹3,00,000 | −₹7,191 |
| SENSEX Mosaic | ₹2,50,000 | +₹777 |
| SENSEX Orbit | ₹2,50,000 | +₹4,079 |
| SENSEX Aurora · subscriber deployment | ₹2,50,000 | −₹5,789 |
| Combined snapshot | ₹13,50,000 | −₹14,611 (−1.08%) |
The arithmetic: the three losing strategies totalled −₹19,467. The two winners added +₹4,856, offsetting approximately 25% of those losses. The combined decline was therefore −₹14,611. ₹14,611 ÷ ₹13,50,000 × 100 = 1.08%—around 1%, not below 1%.
Today’s lesson: don’t depend on one strategy
The sharp fall, recovery and renewed selling today highlight the danger of relying on a single entry time or trading setup. In my earlier article, The Fate of the 9:20 Straddle, I questioned the vulnerability of this widely followed approach. Today’s reversals reinforce my concern: traders should be careful about putting their entire deployment into the 9:20 strategy.
Diversify across different trading approaches
My view is straightforward: don’t depend on one strategy to handle every market condition. Spread capital across strategies with meaningfully different trading approaches—not merely different names. In today’s five-strategy snapshot, three strategies lost money while two made profits. The two winners offset part of the losses, bringing the combined loss to ₹14,611 on ₹13.5 lakh of capital—approximately 1.08%, before trading costs.
That is the practical value of diversification illustrated today: some strategies can cushion losses from others. It cannot prevent every losing day, but it can reduce dependence on a single setup. My takeaway: review your exposure to the 9:20 strategy, avoid concentrating all your capital in it, and judge performance across the combined basket.
